The Resilient Organism
Is a speculative project researching & creating
alternative life based on the genes of the cockroaches.
Why
We are entering a major
crossroads in human history. We can seek innovation, make it to the final frontier, make cleaner energy, and colonise other worlds. But in the current conjuncture, it is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. We as humans will not be able to survive if we continue to pollute the earth.
Researching the gnome of the cockroaches shows us why they are super resilient and adaptable. Their genome includes code for neutralising toxins, regrowing limbs and a thousand genes for detecting food and chemicals.
How
What
Cockroaches can be the solution for humanity to survive in the future. We are creating alternative life by using CRISPR technology, changing the existing human DNA into a new form based on the genes of the cockroaches.
Who Are We?

Two art students developing a new organism
We are Mart Verschuren & Huib Scholten. We started The Resilient Organism as a research project at the art academy.
Being interested in the future of humanity and the human-animal relation we created a project about cockroaches. We believe that we need to seek alternative ways to survive in the future and the cockroach can be the solution to these problems. We are no scientist or biologist at all but created this speculative project based on recent developments in modern-day biology. We are asking ethical questions within these study fields.
